Amazing world underground – Buchan Caves

Located just about 355Km East of Melbourne is this beautiful Buchan Caves Reserve.

This area is a lovely getaway for experiencing wilderness, bush walking and camping. But most of all, this is the place where you should be heading to witness an amazing world underneath us: the famous Buchan Caves.

There have been many caves found around this area from which two of them named Fairy cave and Royal cave are open for tourists for a professionally guided tour.

Inside the caves are lighted up and there are path ways and staircases with railings for safe and easy walking. But, you’ll need good, sturdy, comfortable shoes and be ready for bending down on some parts of the journey which makes it even more fun. πŸ™‚

It is believed that underground rivers cutting through the limestone rocks had created these ancient caves about 400 million years ago. What makes them even more spectacular is the unique limestone formations that can be found inside these caves. These formations are created by rain water dripping through the cracks and dissolving some of the limestones, which come down and deposit as calcite crystals inside the caves.

Over time, crystals known as stalactites are formed down from the roof of the cave and stalagmites are build up from the ground from the droplets falling to the floor.

Truly, this can be considered as a natural wonder here on earth and you’ll never get bored by looking at those beautiful patterns, colours and textures of limestone formations.

The guided tour took about 45 minutes to finish one cave and during that we learned a lot about formation and composition of these caves.

It was an amazing experience indeed. Even my little ones were so thrilled to walk and view inside these mysterious caves.

So, I think, this is again a wonderful place where the whole family can enjoy together and one of the must see locations in our life journey.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and wish you all happy travelling. Take care and stay safe πŸ™‚

  1. These caves looks amazing! But sadly I would never be able to wander through them – I can feel claustrophobia creep in just by looking at your photos! I’m glad you had a great time and thanks for sharing. I hope all is well with you and your family during these uncertain times πŸ˜€ Aiva

    1. Thanks for stopping by Aiva. Actually these caves are very safe. Earlier, I too was scared and nervous to go in ,especially with my 18 months old baby. But now , I know I can go there again. 😊 We made this trip before the crisis time began. Now we have to stay home and safe all the the time. Hope it’s the same in your country as well. Take much care of you and your beautiful family.
